Short History of the German Shepherd Dog

The introduction of the German Shepherd Dog began in 1881 with the advent of the Phylax Society in Germany. The society was short lived and within just a few years was disbanded. Captain Max von Stephanitz was a founding member of the Phylax society and in 1889, he saw the dog Hektor Linksrhein at a dog show. This medium sized dog was supple, powerful, possed endurance, steadiness and intelligence. He was born with a natural ability for herding. He was exactly what the Captain envisioned for the German Shepherd Dog breed. Hektor was purchased on the spot and renamed Horand von Grafrath, the 1st registered German Shepherd Dog. The SV was formed with Captain Max von Stephanitz as President. His motto "Utility and Intelligence" guided the development of the breed standard. Beauty in a German Shepherd Dog was secondary; intelligence, temperament and structural efficiency were the primary focus. Here at GermanShepherds.me, we too believe that working ability is the primary focus of our breeding plans.

In 1907, the 1st German Shepherd Dog was exhibited in America. By 1913, the German Shepherd Dog Club of America was formed. After World War 1, returning American soldiers brought back stories of the German "War Dogs" that were utilized by the German Army. The popularity of the breed flourished, (with the help of "movie stars" Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart). By the mid 20's, German Shepherd Puppy factories were producing high numbers of puppies with a drastic downturn in quality. The poor health of the dogs contributed to a decline in the demand for the breed. After World War II, popularity of the breed again shot up after both the Allied and Axis forces both utilized the dogs as mine detectors, sentinels, guard work, messenger, and other services. In America, Dogs for Defense was formed, providing thousands of dogs to the army. To this day, the German Shepherd Dog is used in a variety of services; guard dogs, personal protection, sport dogs, Military dogs, Police dogs, Seeing Eye dogs, Search and Rescue dogs; a utility breed that can do anything.

Quotes from Captain Max von Stephanitz

"The breeder on a small scale, one who works with 1 or 2 bitches, is the most suitable breeder for service dogs because he can care for his breeding animals & their progeny to such an extent that he can produce strong sound animals that can be trained."

"The dog bred as a business is no longer bred for his service to the breed, but for his market value. The direction of the breed then is dictated by the desires of the market, usually Novices to the breed, who knows nor cares (nothing) of the weal and woes of the breed, knows nothing of the value or aptitude for work...he often only has eyes for Imposing, Remarkable and even a Ruffling Swashbuckler."

"The dog who is sharp as he ought to be is harmless & good-tempered, even to strangers, although he is always reserved. He warns & threatens first, he does not fight at once, and above all, never bites immediately & senselessly when he can accomplish his purpose without a fight."

"In a real struggle with a man, the chief consideration is that the dog help his master quickly & efficiently, and not bother his head too much about overpowering his adversary according to "Queensbury Rules."
